Shanghai Windows
Faith Hampton
A Safe Distance from Which to View Oneself
Every Night at the Same Time
Faith Hampton is a visual artist, now living and working in Vienna, Austria, after earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas. Faith paints and collages layers of thought, feeling and memory, exploring the way our brains process relational information to generate something that is both derivative and fresh. This particular series was painted during the early stages of cultural adjustment to life in Shanghai, China, where Faith lived and worked for just under a decade before moving to Europe. It deals with the sense of closeness but disconnectedness, feeling shut in as well as shut out, as an observer but not yet a participant. The negative space and segmented or layered compositions express both the hopeful nearness of life taking place with its regularity only a wall or a door away, and the loneliness of that in-between space.
